Austin Firms Win National ADDYs

June 11, 2009

Austin ad firms bring home awards

“Austin-based independent advertising firm McGarrah Jessee won five gold ADDYs at this year’s national ADDY awards for its work for Spoetzl Brewery’s Shiner Bock beer.

McGarrah Jessee won more gold awards than any other Texas agency and was second in number only to two other large companies — BBDO and DDB. The agency also garnered three silver ADDYs for its work for Spoetzl Brewery.”

GSD&M won a few.

Action Figure won a silver for its self-promotional video “Punches

Downtown Austin needs more Cheetos and Mountain Dew

August 1, 2008

This is a bit off topic, but a recent “Sound Off” piece in the Austin Business Journal asked the question “What does downtown Austin need?” McGarrah Jessee’s (Austin Ad Agency) Director of Account Services, Britton Upham, said that Austin needs “a center stage”. Think “Mexico City, Paris, or Washington, D.C.” Britton, you forget that the Texas State Capital building in actually larger/taller then the U.S. Capital building and that the reason you find downtown (or at least MC-J’s area of downtown) so grey is that the Frost Bank Tower is casting a shadow on your office for at least half the day.

Then, Kain Shin, a programmer at Red Fly Studio, answered from the heart and I think his take on downtown’s need for real shopping – that is walkable was dead on. “What Austin needs is a giant multilevel entertainment center with a grocery store at the bottom , so people who live in downtown can just go to the grocery store on the ground floor for daily needs, such as Cheetos and Mountain Dew.” Kain, my brother-in-law is a programmer at a game development company and has shared with me his woes of trying to find Diet Mountain Dew, so I understand your pain.

Voice-Over Talent

May 22, 2008

My wife has this worthless ability to almost instantly name the actor doing the voice over of a TV or radio commercial. A commercial for Depends…she’ll say “Tom Selleck”. A commercial for the latest pill…she’ll say “Aiden from Sex and the City”. Ok, so in that example she is actually naming a character played by John Corbett, who my dad would only recognize from the show Northern Exposure, but that’s not my point. I guess my point is this: Neither one of us ever remembers the product/topic/point of the commercial, but we remember the actor doing the voice over.

That begs the question as to whether or not you want to use a well known actor for commercial voice over work. Austin-based ad firm McGarrah Jessee, founded by two ex-GSD&Mers, did some radio and TV spots for McCoy’s Building Supplies and Whataburger a few years ago that had some great voice over work, but did so without the big named (recognizable) talent. I think you can still see/hear many of them at mc-j.com since those folks haven’t refreshed their website in over three years. In my opinion, those commercials are more memorable then the recent ones my wife is so quick to outburst on.

McGarrah/Jessee Hits the Slopes

April 2, 2008

Austin-based McGarrah/Jessee has won its second new client of the year. (The other is high-end sunglasses manufacturer Costa Del Mar.) Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe has award Mc-J with its ~$2 million branding account. The prior agency of record was San Francisco-based Y&R.

I am waiting with giddy anticipation for the first Mc-J produced radio or TV ad that features that same deep voice they use in most of their ads i.e. Whataburger or McCoy’s.

McGarrah Jessee – A SEO Test

January 24, 2008

McGarrah Jessee is an Austin-based advertising agency founded by ex-GSD&Mers Mark McGarrah and Bryan Jessee back in 1996. The point of this post is not to give McGarrah Jessee any extra link juice, but it is to test how well the post will be viewed by Google. The last post I made regarding McGarrah Jessee’s recent new business win is coming up in 11th place. It might as well not exist. We’ll see if this one does better and how quickly it gets indexed.

McGarrah/Jessee Sees New Client

January 8, 2008

In a continuation of proving that I’m not trying to pick on GSD&M, I post this good McGarrah/Jessee news:

McGarrah/Jessee nabs high-end eyewear maker as client

(ok, so you’re thinking what does MC-J news have to do with GSD&M, well, Mark McGarrah and Bryan Jessee, both former GSD&M executives, founded McGarrah/Jessee back in 1996: Former GSD&M execs launch new ad company)
